The Graduation Catalogue was produced alongside the visual identity for Design Academy Eindhoven's 2019 Graduation Show, documenting the work of all graduating students. Working in collaboration with Studio Remco van Bladel, the catalogue had to function as both a document of record and a publication worth exploring.
strategy
With dozens of student projects to present, the central question was how to balance individuality with consistency. The answer was to give each project room to breathe within a shared visual framework. Drawing on the visual identity developed for the graduation show provided a ready-made system to build from.
design
Elements from the graduation show's identity, the Campina factory and the nesting stencil system, were continued into the publication. This gave the catalogue a clear visual language while leaving room for each project to stand on its own. Some pages were designed to be folded and torn open, physically involving the reader in discovering content. A die-cut dust jacket continued this idea to the outside of the book.
insight
Continuing the graduation show's visual identity into the catalogue created a clear connection between the exhibition and the publication. The stencil system that worked across banners and signage translated naturally into the cover. The ripping elements fit the same thinking: design students are expected to engage actively with objects, so a catalogue that asks the same of its reader felt entirely fitting.
deliverables
The catalogue ran to 500 pages with a print run of 2,300 copies. Together with the graduation show identity, it formed a complete body of work for the 2019 edition. That year, a student jury selected it as one of the best designed books in the Netherlands.
